4 bar mechanism

Project

Overview

The goal of this project is to produce a CAD assembly of a 4 four-bar mechanism using SolidWorks and then run a motion study of it to analyze some important mechanical features of it

Assembly

Process

Four different components were provided: one bearing and three different length bars. The assembling process began by importing 2 bearings and constraining their movement., so they can be fixed and separated at a certain distance. This was achieved using the mate (Coincident, Distance) command. After the bearings were fixed the three bars were imported and assembled in a fashion that the mechanism had only one degree of freedom so it can move by a single motion source. This was achieved by using again the mate (Hinge, Concentric, and Coincident) command

Simulation

To run the mechanism simulation a Motion Study was added. In the Motion Study configurations, a Rotary motor was added to the bar connected to the left bearing. This motor is set to rotate the component at a constant angular velocity. Additionally, gravity was added to the study.

Results

The video shows how the mechanism behaves and the motion paths of the points located 1/4, 1/2, ad 3/4 of the length of the middle.
